Taranis -> Mode 1 Buddy Box
« on: 30/10/2014, 07:42:08 PM »
Chris, and all Mode 1 Pilots...

I've sorted the Mode 1 buddy box out that you showed me last night.

We can now use a JR X2610 Mode 1 TX as a buddy box with our Taranis TX.

First, I found a way of reseting the JR TX back to it's factory defaults so no mixes / rates / expos etc.

The CPPM channel order out of the JR was correct striaght away, so I guess the DSC format is somehow standardised?!

The stick throws from the JR were way short of full stick throws on my Taranis so I cranked the throws up on the JR to exactly match the Taranis. Also same with the JR centre sub-trim.

Cool! Now aircraft bound to FrSky / Taranis combos can be used as trainers, or better stilll...

Mode 1 pilots could help me / us maiden our aircraft!  :o

My Arising Star model on Taranis has the "Trainer" function enabled, soon to be copied to other models.

Question: I want to make the 35MHz transmitter section of the JR "inert", but I don't want to have to cut or desolder wires inside, so is remove the TX crystal enough?

One special thing. For the JR to operate as a pure slave, the power switch needs to be OFF. Strange. As soon as you plus the DSC plug into the JR, even with nothing on the other end, it senses the plug insertion and powers on from its own battery...

Cheers!

Jim

That great Jim, just what I'd hoped.

Leaving the crystal out was always considered sufficient, there can be no oscillation without a crystal. So no frequency and no RF.

Yes that's the standard Jr/Spektrum way. The Tx that was switched off was always the slave and the one switched on was always the master. A great system, as long as you remember the one quirk, that the buddy lead needs unplugging to switch Tx's off.

You can have a play at mode 1 on a sim now  :P

Somewhere I also have a JR of my own, Something like an X378. We can use that as a mode 2 buddy too. (Although we can with Taranii or a Spekky Dx6 I have too).
